An Interdisciplinary Unit On The Civil War Themed - 872 Words

To showcase my proficiency with middle level curriculum, instruction, and assessment, I have selected an interdisciplinary unit on the Civil War themed â€Å"Preserving the Past†, a Discipline Literacy and Instructional Planning project about North Carolina geography, and a collaborative Greek Mythology unit I taught during student teaching. In all three of these artifacts, I have developed relevant, integrative, challenging, and exploratory units of study. The â€Å"Preserving the Past† unit incorporates all four core subjects as well as a service learning opportunity. My interdisciplinary unit on geography connects Language Arts with Social Studies with visual art mixed in, and the Greek mythology ELA unit was taught in conjunction with a Social Studies class (1). The Civil War unit and NC geography unit I have created incorporate Common Core standards as well as NC Essential standards. Lesson plans and assessments in all of these units were created using backwards design in which I started by looking at the standards and objectives students would be expected to reach and based my assessment based on those objectives (2,10). The â€Å"Preserving the Past† unit was created in collaboration with two other colleagues. We all created the Social Studies lesson plans, and each person was responsible for one of the other core subjects. Kennedy once said, â€Å"The cost of freedom is always high, but Americans have always paid it. And one path we shall never choose, and that is the path of surrender, or submission†. War has been an everyday occurrence in the lives of ordinary people in developing countries. Ever since the invention of the sword, nations have waged war on their enemies. Through a combination of various fiction and nonfiction texts, the Interface English textbook by Joan Green, explore the theme of â€Å"Freedom from War: DREAM or POSSIBILITY?†(83). This unit explores the history of war, people s experiences of war, and the aftermath of war. Freedom from war is but a dream. In a world where people are shooting each other, tolerating violence towards each other, and bombing each other, freedom from war is clearly not a possibility. Gun violence is an inherent part of human nature. To begin with, ever since the explorers discovered North America they were shooting everyone. Written as a poem about the past, Jeannette C. Armstrong explains in â€Å"History Lesson† what happened after the first European explorers got off Christopher Columbus’s ship. â€Å"Out of the belly of Christopher s ship a mob bursts†¦ Shooting buffalo, Shooting each other left and right†(85). This quote is an allusion to the many wars and conflicts that happened since the explorers came to North America. We know that every student learns In different ways so by presenting a video using a song to help remember important parts of oxygenation or any other topic is great. It’s a fun video so it is a sort of way to take a break while still learning. The cons are that it is really a very poorly made video as far as production value goes. At times it is difficult to hear the song and it is, obviously, a I felt that the first video, from abracadabra, was the best video considering my audience. Yes, it is lengthy, but it is so thorough and tells the viewer everything that they need to know about oxygenation. V=Japanned As far as content goes for this particular video it isn’t the best choice because it only talks about a short topic pertaining to fluid and electrolytes. I chose this video though because of the creator of the video, Michael Liners. He creates videos for nursing students about everything that we need to know to be nurses. The pros are that Michael Liners clearly and easily discusses topics that make it easy to understand, Mr.. Liners specifically created these videos for nursing students, and it’s a fun video, I thought that the use of humor and analogies were great. The cons are that, as I fluid and electrolytes. The production value of the video is pretty poor and it’s difficult to hear the speaker at times. My favorite video was the near comprehensive one by Megan Monoclinic. The fact that is specifically made to help nursing students understand everything they can about fluid and electrolytes is reason enough to consider it the best of the three, but t is Just really well made and thorough in content. Youth videos as study tools I have found that Youth videos are great for study tools and knowledge generators. As nursing students there are so much material that we much digest and memorize at times. As I mentioned earlier, everyone learns in different styles and it seems that Youth has a video for people who have any of the many different learning styles. As supplemental material these Youth videos are best used. Most of the videos aren’t meant to be used as a way to learn everything there is to know bout a certain topic, but to give a person a baseline on a topic of interest. I couldn’t think of many cons to using Youth as a study tool. I believe that if something can help you than you should use it. If there is any argument against using Youth as a study tool it’s that there isn’t anyone to check information to see if it is correct. Anyone can upload a video about anything, spout nonsense and inaccurate information and no one would know. So, as supplemental material to what your teacher is telling you in class these videos can be beneficial, but not as a main source of knowledge.
